Data Sheet

Mark Humphries’ innovative conversion of the former Sherborne Wharf grain store provided Birmingham with it’s first taste of loft living. The 30 apartments of all shapes and sizes including magnificent penthouse versions on the upper floors set the standard for this style of building. Construction works were complicated and the challenge of utilising an existing iron framed building made design and engineering difficult in order to meet regulations. Demanding wealthy residents also proved challenging.

Mark chose to finish each unit to a basic shell standard and then allow each of the residents to ‘create an environment of their own’. Whilst this provided a diverse range of styles and approaches the management of the main construction works and overlapping this with multiple resident led fit out projects and multiple contractors meant that management of the project was complex. A virtually permanent site present was necessary to achieve the closing phases. The result however is truly magnificent and a credit to all.
